Fashion Forward & Runway Ready

By: Catie Anderson, curator of education on April 23rd, 2014

Ask any of my coworkers and they’ll assure you that no two days are alike at the Woodson Art Museum. Each exhibition ushers in new artwork to fill the galleries and fresh programming on our docket.

My next big hurdle involves coordinating forty volunteer models, hair stylists (thanks Verve Salon & Spa!), makeup artists, and seamstresses. This challenge doesn’t sound like a typical art museum (whatever that is?), does it?!

It’s all for a fashion show taking place on Saturday, May 3, 7 – 8 p.m. at the Woodson Art Museum.
Nancy Judd artist residency programs
Our Recycled Runway Fashion Show is the culmination of a partnership with ReDress artist-in-residence Nancy Judd and the UW-Madison Design Studies department. Amazing garments were created by undergraduate and graduate students in the Textile and Apparel Design department in the School of Human Ecology. These students worked with Judd in mid-February, learning about the challenges and possibilities of incorporating reclaimed materials into their fashions.

I spent Monday afternoon reviewing garments and organizing our model list with coworker Shannon Pueschner. We had so much fun examining each creation up-close. We were especially delighted to note the sophisticated craftsmanship and clever use of materials. Fashion show attendees are in for a treat!

Did you celebrate Earth Day yesterday? If this eco-holiday wasn’t on your radar this week, you can make an environmentally friendly visit to your favorite art museum – the Woodson Art Museum! – through June 15 to see the three “RePurposed & ReImagined” exhibitions, which highlight the endless possibilities of reclaimed materials. You also can incorporate environmentally conscious decisions into your daily life and make an Eco-Pledge when you visit the Museum.
