On the Road

What do art museum directors do when they are away from the office for a few days?

They visit art museums, of course.

With the 2018 Birds in Art catalogue at the printer and with The World According to Federico Uribe drawing huge numbers of visitors daily, the timing was just right for a mid-summer long weekend.

Indiana was our destination for a gathering of my husband, Ernie’s, siblings and cousins. With close to 500 miles covered, we were in position for an early Friday morning visit to the Fort Wayne Museum of Art.

It had been many years since a prior visit, but I remembered the handsome facility designed by architect Walter Netsch of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, situated on a prominent corner in downtown Fort Wayne.

We were treated to the 46th International Glass Invitational Award Winners exhibition, organized by renowned contemporary glass gallery, Habatat Galleries, based in Royal Oak, Michigan. Featuring an array of studio glass artists, the exhibition was visually stunning as well as intriguing. These photos offer a glimpse of the diverse works on view.

As we drove away from the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, a banner hanging on the building caught my eye. Medieval to Metal: The Art & Evolution of the Guitar, which began its national tour at the Woodson Art Museum in February 2015, will travel to Fort Wayne this fall.

I love the small world of this museum exhibition scheduling coincidence.

Back in Wausau and back in the office, I feel refreshed thanks to the weekend getaway. I’m ready to tackle the many remaining to-do-list items in advance of the Saturday, September 8, debut of the 2018 Birds in Art exhibition. I’m also eager to continue welcoming visitors to The World According to Federico Uribe, which remains on view through Sunday, August 26.

Whether you’re on the road in Wisconsin, Indiana, or any of the other forty-eight states, you can be sure there are art museums eager to welcome you. Spark your imagination and ignite your creativity with an art museum visit this summer.
