Standards of Excellence

At the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, standards of excellence are not abstract. They are the principles that guide the Museum’s operations, commitment to professionalism, and programming day in and day out.

How do we know?

Because the Museum is not only a member of the American Alliance of Museums that has taken the Pledge of Excellence, but also is a participant in — and proponent of — the Alliance’s Accreditation Program.

It is, therefore, with great pride, that we celebrate the recent announcement of the Woodson Art Museum’s fourth accreditation.

The award of accreditation is the culmination of a rigorous process undertaken every ten years. The accreditation cycle begins with the completion of a self-study encompassing an array of core operational documents, which is evaluated by Alliance staff. A two-person peer-review team then visits and prepares a report. These elements then are considered by the Accreditation Commission, comprising museum professionals who bring significant leadership-level experience to their all-encompassing review. Of the nation’s estimated 33,000 museums, only 1,070 are currently accredited.

In her letter congratulating the Woodson Art Museum on its most recent accreditation, American Alliance of Museums president and CEO Laura Lott wrote: “Your participation in the accreditation process demonstrates that the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum is publicly committed to upholding the museum field’s high professional standards for education, public service and collections care. By achieving this mark of distinction, you are a leader in the field – exemplifying the best museums have to offer and reminding both your peers and the public how much museums really matter to communities.”

Please share our pride in this achievement and know that the Woodson Art Museum Board, staff, and volunteers are committed to continued excellence and to ethical and transparent public service.
