My office is on the far southeast corner of the Museum’s original house structure, so I have a front row seat to see and hear how the construction of the Museum’s new addition is coming along.

I’m happy to report that it is progressing nicely. Blessed with good weather, significant work was achieved in August. Footings and foundations were poured, structural steel erected, and now, they’ve begun preparing for the next phase of internal and external framing.
We are excited to show off the progress for everyone in town for the Birds in Art opening weekend, starting with Members’ Previews on Thursday, September 10 and Friday, September 11, and the public opening of the exhibition on Saturday, September 12.

As the Museum continues to acquire phenomenal artwork (come see New to the Collection!), space for permanent collection storage is badly needed. Additionally, as the Museum’s talented staff continue to expand programs and opportunities for our visitors, they need adequate space to work their magic. It is wild to think about all the spaces we’ve occupied in the Museum’s original house structure over the years. Old bedrooms, bathrooms, servants’ quarters, and everything in between have been office spaces for staff.
Just a few years ago, sending a note addressed to me was like sending one to Harry Potter. I shared an office with Business Manager Diane Wendt for eight years-my desk was in the closet of an old bedroom-so I can attest that we’re overdue for new work areas.

That is why the purpose-built storage spaces for the Museum’s extensive works on paper collection, combined with four purpose-built office spaces, will be transformative for the Museum’s staff and operation. Not only will these new spaces be great, but also reclaiming and repurposing the existing spaces currently being utilized for offices and storage will benefit the Museum and staff for years to come as we continue to expand.
We look forward to all of you seeing the progress of the new addition and welcoming you into the space in early 2027. In the meantime, don’t worry, I’ll make sure to check on the progress through my window.
