Master wood engraver, Thomas Bewick (1753-1828) published A History of British Birds, from 1797-1804 in two separate volumes: Land Birds and Water Birds. Bewick’s innovative engraving techniques transformed the letterpress book printing industry, spawning a new trade of professional wood engraving artisans. Tony Drehfal shares his insights on Bewick’s work, with scans, photographs, and books printing during his lifetime.
