Yuyi Morales is an award-winning author and illustrator of children’s books. A native of Xalapa, Mexico, who immigrated to San Francisco in 1994, Yuyi found inspiration and taught herself English in the children’s book section of the local library. Influenced by her Mexican upbringing, her illustrations and stories give poignant insights from an immigrant’s perspective. This colorful exhibition features more than 60 mixed-media artworks to enliven and inspire all ages.
Coming from a family of avid storytellers, it’s no surprise that the bright and cheerful artworks in the books by author / illustrator Yuyi Morales are filled with thoughtful details and powerful messages that appeal to all audiences.
Morales’ widely acclaimed works have been recognized with starred reviews in publications such as Publisher’s Weekly, The New York Times, and Booklist. She is a six-time recipient of the prestigious Pura Belpré award and was the first Latina to receive a Caldecott Honor for her book, Viva Frida, in 2015.
