Wausau-area high school students participated in a six-month photography project, including workshops and conducting their own photo shoots to explore the question “what makes Wausau a great place to live?”

In September, Arizona-based artist Brooke Shaden led a workshop focused on how a single image can tell a story. Students explored visual narratives in photography and other art mediums and participated in a photo shoot during which Shaden demonstrated techniques. Some students later participated in a photo shoot with Shaden and Dave Junion of Junion Photography to further develop skills, learning about camera settings, using effective background images and props when visualizing and creating the photography storyboard, how to set up a photo shoot, and how to create “chapters” of their story.

In December, students visited the Art Museum to view 50 Greatest National Geographic Photographs with Junion and engage in critiques of one another’s photographs.

Community members voted online – Saturday, February 28 through Sunday, March 8, 2015 – to select photographs to be exhibited at the Woodson Art Museum, March 26 through May 31. To inquire about purchasing a photograph, ask at the Visitor Services desk or connect with us at 715.845.7010. A reception at the Woodson Art Museum, Thursday, March 26, 5-7 pm, celebrates students’ efforts.

The year-long project was directed by Diane Goetsch, D.C. Everest School District Fine Arts Coordinator, with collaboration from Dave Junion Photography, Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, Performing Arts Foundation, and the Wausau Area Chamber of Commerce.
