Bryce Cebula, marketing and communication manager
Having a large selection of high-quality images is crucial for any marketing efforts. Starting last summer, I began taking photos of the galleries and programs using the Museum’s camera rather than an iPhone. Learning how to use a good camera has been a fun challenge, and I’ve been able to enlist the help of another coworker in the process.
Emma Whitman, Visitor Services team member, has a passion and talent for photography. Knowing this, I have connected with her to get some advice on how to capture great images.

Here’s a little bit about Emma’s photography practice:
Q. When did you start getting into photography?
A. I think I probably got into photography around 2012-2013, maybe a little earlier. My dad taught me on his Canon EF and Olympus OM-1 film cameras, and I was hooked instantly!
Q. What’s your favorite thing to photograph?
A. That’s a tough one. I’d have to say doing some really fun, artistic photography that I can play around with would be my favorite. Experimenting with lighting, effects, and doing fun editing techniques in Photoshop is always so much fun. I have spent hours editing and tweaking a single photo just to make sure it turned out right. I love images that say something or really make people think. Creating those is always a fun challenge.
Q. Photography is a vast medium and getting started can be intimidating. Do you have any tips for someone who’s interested in trying it out?
A. Just start! If you have a smartphone, you already have a camera; fancy equipment is not required. I used to take photos of literally everything. Start learning about composition, and take note of what inspires you, and keep looking for it. It sounds corny and cliche, but everyone really does have their own unique vision. There is truly beauty and value in everything around us, and photography is such a great medium to showcase that!
Along with learning from her, I’ve been inspired by her work! Emma has taken images of the galleries during the last few exhibitions, and I’ve been able to utilize them for ads, social media posts, and website updates! No doubt, some of your favorites might be the handiwork of one Emma Whitman.
