Twenty-three prints by revered nineteenth-century American artist James A. McNeill Whistler comprises this exhibition from the Dr. Richard L. Shorkey Collection and organized by the Art Museum of Southeast Texas in Beaumont. Whistler, best known for the painting Arrangement in Grey and Black (a.k.a. Whistler’s Mother), was born in Lowell, Massachusetts in 1834. Considered one of the greatest painters of the nineteenth century, his etchings and prints also are highly renowned and feature innovative, realistic portrayals of ordinary people and places such as a figure framed in a doorway or a boy seated on a pier. Artwork in this series from the late 1850s to 1880 reveals Whistler’s stylistic development from producing heavily hatched and cross-hatched etchings of working-class European scenes to his lighter Impressionist style and technique.
