Museum Collection Exhibitions on View

Wausau, Wisconsin: Exhibitions drawn from the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum’s collection are debuting to complement the 2015 Birds in Art exhibition opening Saturday, September 12. Birds in Art and Well Drawn: Collection Highlights remain on view through November 29; other collection exhibitions remain on view through February 21, 2016 and beyond.

Audubon to Wyeth: Paintings, Drawings, and Sculptures – on view September 5, 2015 – December 31, 2016 This dazzling, historic array of bird imagery in artworks spanning the early-nineteenth through late-twentieth centuries includes work by John James Audubon, Martin Johnson Heade, Jasper Cropsey, Albert Bierstadt, Frank W. Benson, N.C. Wyeth, and Andrew Wyeth.

Capturing Nature: The Art of Owen J. Gromme – on view through August 14, 2016 Oil paintings, watercolors, and sketches reveal Gromme’s lifelong passion for nature and wildlife.

Well Drawn: Collection Highlights – on view through November 29, 2015 Drawings in pencil, colored pencil, graphite, watercolor, and charcoal – from finely rendered to loosely sketched – encompass a range of artists’ impressions and offer insight into how artists observe, contemplate, and develop compositions.

Shoreline Symphony – on view through February 21, 2016 Experience artworks from the Woodson Art Museum’s collection that portray the sights and sounds at the water’s edge. The hypnotic nature of water attracts artists, who observe and skillfully capture an ever-changing landscape while interpreting the rhythmic sounds. Challenge your senses. Hear the sounds, feel the wind, and imagine yourself transported to another place.

Carved & Cast – on view through February 14, 2016 Small-scale and medium-sized sculptures recently acquired by the Woodson Art Museum are featured, including maquettes by Gwynn Murrill and work by Willard Stone, Jason Stone, Simon Gudgeon, Hank Tyler, Hélène Arfi, and Tim Cherry.
