We See You, Out There, Attending

By: Elaina Johann, administrative manager on November 1st, 2023

Lately, the Woodson Art Museum galleries have been hopping with visitors from school groups looking to enrich their education with art opportunities to friends making their annual pilgrimage to Wausau to see this year’s edition of Birds in Art and maybe peek at our beautiful fall coloring.

With this flurry of activity, it is no surprise that we are happy to see attendance numbers reaching pre-pandemic levels. This trend at the Museum is exceeding what we are seeing across museums in the United States. In June, the American Alliance of Museums reported in the 2023 National Snapshot of United States Museums that “Two-thirds (of responding museums) continue to experience reduced attendance, averaging 71% of their pre-pandemic attendance.” We are happy to see rising attendance in our neck of the woods and hope other museums are benefiting from an influx of visitors too.

We thank you for visiting the Woodson Art Museum this fall and sharing your experiences with friends and family. We love reading your comments about visiting and thought Woodson Wonderings’ readers might enjoy hearing from happy visitors as well:

“This is great – I come every year – love it!” – Heard at the Museum’s greeter desk

“Wonderful day of beauty. Outside grounds there are many pieces of sculpture to enjoy. Inside several floors of exhibits. Fall leaves perfect. From the rooftop gallery there were several sculptures, but the views were stupendous looking over downtown Wausau. Artwork, I am envious of such talent. So thankful this is shared with the community.” – Lucy S, Trip Advisor

“It’s one of the best.” – Heard at the Museum’s greeter desk by a visitor that has seen Birds in Art every year since 1976

“An Amazing exhibit of Birds in Art this year plus 99 duck decoys. This museum is a wonderful space with great gardens and garden statuary.” – Whynottodays, Trip Advisor

“The Music brought the images in the artwork to life – seemed to make the birds want to take off flying!” – Heard at the Museum’s greeter desk during a Classical Thursday evening

“I think everyone walks out with a smile.” – Heard at the Museum’s greeter desk

There is still a month to visit this fall to see Birds in Art 2023 and exhibitions drawn from the Museum’s collection. Birds in Art remains on view through November 26, 2023, See/Sea: Beyond the Horizon through January 7, and The Real Decoy through February 25, 2024.
