Woodson Art Museum Director Named Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts & Letters Fellow

WAUSAU, WISCONSIN: Woodson Art Museum director Kathy Kelsey Foley was honored as one of seven 2014 Fellows inducted by the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts & Letters during a ceremony Sunday afternoon at the Overture Center for the Arts in Madison.

Established in 1981, the Fellows program represents the highest level of recognition conferred by the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts & Letters. Drawn from a pool of statewide nominees, Fellows are elected for their extraordinary levels of accomplishment in their fields as well as a lifelong commitment to intellectual discourse and public service.

The 2014 Fellows are: poet Robin Chapman, museum director Kathy Kelsey Foley, producer and director David Frank, folklorist James P. Leary, limnologist John J. Magnuson, materials engineer Pradeep Rohatgi, and conservation biologist Stanley A. Temple.

“Recognition by the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts & Letters is both humbling and deeply gratifying,” Foley said. “To be acknowledged by one’s peers adds an importance and relevance to the work we do day in, day out at the Woodson Art Museum as we strive to make the visual arts accessible to all. I look forward with great anticipation to involvement with the Wisconsin Academy staff, programs, and remarkable Fellows. I am grateful for this honor.”

The total number of Fellows is limited to 100 and includes George Archibald, co-founder and director, International Crane Foundation, Baraboo; Barbara Brown Lee, chief educator, Milwaukee Art Museum; Ruth DeYoung Kohler, director, John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Sheboygan; Joanne Kluessendorf, Museum director and professor, UW-Fox Valley, and Wisconsin Federation of Museums president; David Lenz, a painter, 2009 winner of the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery Competition, and whose artwork was featured in a 2004 Woodson Art Museum exhibition, “Beyond City Limits: Rural Views of the Midwest;” and Tom Uttech, Saukville artist who grew up in Merrill and whose artwork was featured in a March 1999 Woodson Art Museum exhibition, “Tom Uttech: Mystical Landscapes.”
